The Taiwan Art Space Alliance (TASA) is celebrating its tenth year, summarizing past annual meeting topics and various project achievements. We aim to clarify the current shortcomings of art-in-residence and explore the potential roles it can play in the overall art ecology. Continuing with this concept and original intention, this year’s annual meeting will be held for four days in Taitung, Taiwan.

This topic focuses on evaluating and learning from the International Conferences/ Meetings, highlighting areas for improvement, and gathering feedback for future events.
Expected outcomes
By sharing experiences and advice and establishing concrete connections and networks among participants, we expect the conference outcomes to be applied and practiced in real-world settings, thereby solidifying the annual meeting’s future role.

The discussion format encourages participation from members with practical experience. Those interested in the conference theme and seeking further involvement are also welcome to speak. Feedback and practical experiences from frontline workers will aid the future progress and growth of the annual conference.

Create your own annual meeting, Starting from Planning: How to Make the First Annual Conference / Meeting a Success
Organizing an annual conference/ meeting is a complex and challenging task that requires meticulous planning and effective execution. This topic aims to share the factors behind the success of an annual conference/ meeting and the potential unforeseen challenges they may face through group discussions. The feedback and suggestions collected will serve as valuable input for the success of future conferences.

The sustainable issue of Artist-in-residence
The Panel Facilitated by Hsiao-Chi CHU (Taiwan), Researcher of the Management and Research Center, and Ju-Fang Tan (Taiwan), Director of the Management and Research Center
This topic, inspired by the 1987 UN report on sustainable development, features a project shared by TASA Research Center partners on project execution, cultural impact definition, and expected effects, inviting conference members to exchange suggestions and feedback.
Expected outcomes
Share concrete practices of artist-in-residence in different regions, including the selection of artists, locations, and cooperation models, challenges encountered, potential solutions, resource allocation, and demand adjustment.

This meeting delves into the sustainability of artist-in-residence, considering how they promote regional sustainable development and cultural influence. It evaluates past successes and shortcomings and explores future improvements and innovations, encouraging participants to share their views and experiences to improve the research projects.
Workshop II
Bridging Different Worlds Together; Cultural impact and Assessment Indicate
Based on the progress and development of previous research projects, this session evaluates the impact on organizations from six aspects: “Culture,” “Economy,” “Society,” “Ecology,” “Personal Well-being,” and “Citizens,” and brainstorms points of action or operational directions.

Inclusive and Diverse
Explores the concept and practice of inclusion in the context of diverse cultural backgrounds. The aim is to promote communication and understanding among different groups, and to establish an inclusive social environment through creativity and imagination. The meeting will discuss concrete strategies for art equality and inclusion issues to drive broader social inclusion practices and action plans.
Expected outcomes
Recognize the importance of inclusion in a multicultural environment anew, develop concrete action plans to promote effective communication and coordination strategies between different ethnic groups, and accelerate the implementation of effective art equality and social inclusion practices.
Notes for participants
This topic extends the themes of previous annual meetings, establishing consensus among participants on the concepts of multicultural and ethnic inclusion. Discuss how to bring transformative opportunities, create dialogue spaces, break traditional art boundaries, and support diverse art expressions to provide more creation and exhibition opportunities for marginalized groups.

This topic Art and Community: Socially Engaged Art Practices Considering Regional Situations delves into the intersection of art, community engagement, and social responsibility, highlighting the transformative power of art interventions in fostering community cohesion and addressing social issues.
Expected outcomes
Diverse perspectives and social awareness: Explore and establish suitable relationships for art intervention in communities through the perspectives of artists, local residents, and policymakers. Reflect on and review existing cultural policies’ support and limitations for art projects and propose possible solutions.

Workshop III
Creating a Socially Collaborative Art Project: Artistic practices to overcome socio-ecological issues
This workshop will function as a platform for creating a socially collaborative art project that engages with a wide range of topics, such as society, politics, environment, and ecology, and the development of artistic practice that engages with a broad section of the public. The proposal should promote solidarity and collaboration and aim to expand the role of “art” in “society” beyond contemporary art institutions.

Operations and Strategies in an Organization
The topic encompasses various aspects of organizational operation and strategy in arts administration, such as international exchanges, cultivating professional abilities, and managing resources like finance and human capital.
Expected outcomes
Share practical application cases of international exchanges in organizational operations, including experiences in cross-border cooperation, cultural exchange, and resource sharing. Discuss challenges related to financial management, resource allocation, human training, and structuring, and finally, make corresponding commitments and responsibilities for achieving long-term sustainable development of the organization.
Notes for participants
This meeting mainly discusses the purpose of organizational operations by sharing and exchanging different operational strategies’ challenges and limitations, proposing possible action recommendations or solutions. (finding key points).
Workshop IV
Space Station Survival: Placemaking Edition
The goal of this game collaboratively designed by artist Margo Gray and the Granite Falls Community Artist in Residence Program is to compel those in various roles of community service, arts, community and economic infrastructure and development to reimagine the ways they can collaborate on initiatives and projects, imagining creatively for the future.

With Heidi Vogels and Yasmine Ostendorf we will explore the development of the residency landscape in the Netherlands and Europe, as seen from the perspective of the independent art scene. We will discuss the key aspects of residences, and different models of organizing and funding residency programs. Opportunity to meet more friends and promote opportunities for exchange.

Cross-Domain Collaboration from Regional and Cultural Discussions
Starting from regional collaboration cases, we will explore communication, coordination, and project ideas among different organizations/groups. Through experience sharing, we will clarify the resources and ideas each can offer, recognizing the strengths of both organizations and individuals. Extending to international network participation and cooperation, we will prepare for transnational collaborations, discuss how to conduct them and understand their subsequent impacts and connections. We will provide substantial advice and feedback to groups and individuals looking to start projects or establish cross-domain offices. In group discussions, we will propose suggestions and questions, share resources and project ideas, and explore successful cooperation experiences among different organizations/groups and individuals, as well as the challenges faced in communication and coordination.
Expected outcomes
This initiative aims to highlight the potential value and benefits of regional and international collaboration, fostering meaningful exchange and cooperation among participants. It supports organizations and individuals in developing cross-disciplinary projects and bilateral exchanges, while also encouraging the sharing of existing resources and ideas. In doing so, it seeks to provide momentum and support for shaping future visions and expectations of collaboration.

Workshop V
Navigating expectations, accountability and precarity in transnational cultural labor
A structured discussion on transnational working conditions in arts and culture. The session invites participants to address two case studies by a role-play methodology. A card game, a mapping practice and a Letter on working conditions are used to support the dialogue. The aim is to go beyond critique and develop collective navigation strategies for transnational cultural workers.
